Three contest winners take on the challenge of transforming apartment design

Transforming one apartment building after another
Three Samhwa contest winners

Samhwa employees went on to win the grand prize, the encouragement prize, and an honorable mention at the first National Contest for New Public Housing Design. Let’s take a look at the three talented winner and their approaches to design.

Comparing my design against others

The National Contest for New Public Housing Design, sponsored by the Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH) and run by Hanguksaekchaehakhoe, was held to encourage innovative ideas on reforming the image of public housing and help improve the sustainability of urban landscapes. Throughout the month of August, the organizers received and reviewed entries from graduate students and professionals in Korea. The winners were announced on September 7, and three contestants from Samhwa were on the list. This is welcome news to the company as well, as apartment painting is emerging as an important issue under the recently enacted Clean Air Conservation Act (CACA). The three contestants, who all began working at Samhwa the same year, kept one another engaged in the same race through constant encouragement and feedback.

“I didn’t have a chance to have an objective view and evaluate my design during the nine years I’ve worked at Samhwa. To my knowledge, I believe this year was the first time a public nationwide contest was held to attract competitive apartment complex designs in Korea. I applied to compete because it was a good opportunity for me to seek objective external feedback.”

The other winners nodded in agreement as Ryu Ha-ram, a Samhwa deputy manager who won the grand prize, spoke. All three women sacrificed their weekends and sleep to prepare for the contest while working full time in their respective positions. They feel doubly rewarded by the results because they have worked so hard for them. Won Yu-gyeong, winner of the encouragement award, said: “I enjoyed being able to get creative with my imagination. This award has motivated me again to enjoy my work.” Park Ji-yeong, another deputy manager at Samhwa who won honorable mention at the competition, commented: “We made a name for Samhwa at this year’s contest. I’m proud to have helped increase Samhwa’s reputation.”

Transforming old apartment buildings into new

The exterior walls of apartment buildings in Korea have to be repainted every five or six years as the existing paints weather under the elements and also due to aging of the buildings themselves. Apartment painting has been growing in importance in recent years as developers and owners have come to recognize how painting can help increase the value of their properties. Apartment residents themselves are also paying more attention to the exterior design of their buildings. Color simulations are used to determine which colors would best suit a given apartment building in light of the surrounding environment and community.

The three Samhwa winners’ job is to simulate colors so that clients can imagine what the finished painting results will look like on their properties. Having worked years in this capacity, the three women have developed their respective knowhow and techniques. Won says: “Someone needs to do a good job coordinating from the middle position so that residents can find satisfaction in the finished design and developers can have a painting plan that can be easily applied on site. Our job is to play our coordinating role well so that projects can proceed and complete without interruption.” Partnership with sales representatives is another vital element. Ryu says she can tell what it’s like on the development site and what design should be pursued just by hearing the tone of the voice of sales reps she works with.

“Residents’ choice is the most important factor in decision-making on apartment designs. So we analyze the developments on site with speed and add design elements that can improve resident and developer satisfaction alike. The core skill we need in this job is to identify the intent and needs of our clients so that we can give them the best design representations of their needs.”

For Park, the most important element of color simulation and design is the latest trends, which she makes sure to stay on top of so as to produce popular designs that appeal to everyone.

Seeking continued growth and progress

What are the favorite colors of these color experts? Ryu chose white, a befitting choice for someone who values clarity in everything she does. She believes the best design is a simple one, with all unnecessary details removed.

Won likes the mystical and elegant purple, but believes yellow is the color that represents her the best. She is indeed the life of the party who gets along with everyone. She prefers blues and greys, and tries to personify grey—providing a comfortable and matching canvas on which other colors can shine.

The demand for repainting is soaring now as apartment developers and construction companies try to finish their projects within this year. As the amended and reinforced Clean Air Conservation Act takes effect next year, property developers will be forced to paint their properties using rollers instead of paint sprayers that can add pollutants to the air. The three contest winners stay busy in their respective jobs as there is so much demand these days for the work they do.

Are they ready to seek more growth and progress when they’re so busy? Ryu says she still wants to “take on a new project,” with which she can enhance her competence even further and make a name for the company. Park agrees as well, as she too wants to get deeper in her field of knowledge by taking on new tasks or projects that can help her better harness her capabilities. Park says she also wants to try more experimental designs featuring bolder colors. Won is trying to find out what she needs to do to create a work environment that supports innovation and research by the people who work for her on her team. The ambition and talent of the three winners cause us to look forward to their career growth.
