Samhwa’s Market Planning Team at the beginning and end of product development

The Market Planning Team is where every member is a product/project manager. “Good colleagues are the best benefit you could ask of your employer,” they say. An in-depth interview was held with Kim Seong-hyeok, Kang Ryun, Lee Jae-ho, and Yun Ji-won—all referred to simply as “pros”—of the Market Planning Team to understand the significance of their work in managing the entire lifespan of product development, from research to post-marketing follow-up.

Q. Thank you for agreeing to this interview. Please introduce your team to the reader.

Yun: Nice to meet you all! Our Market Planning Team strives to realize the needs and wants of the market with our products. Specifically, we analyze markets at home and abroad as well as the competition to discover what new products should be developed to satisfy consumer needs, and lead the entire product development process until the launching of products on the market.

Kang: We not only launch new products, but also provide follow-up support for existing ones on the market. We analyze the strengths and weaknesses of popular products as well as less popular ones to identify what could be done differently to boost demand. Our main goal is to understand and satisfy the needs of the market and ensuring continued support from consumers for the products we have already marketed.

Confidence in the meaning of one’s work

Q. What is most important to you in your work?

Lee: I spend most of my working hours thinking about how I could improve what I’m doing. It may be a simple task, but I keep thinking about how I can maximize the outcome and try to do things accordingly. Whenever I hit a mental block, I talk to my teammates. We have an atmosphere of free and open feedback on this team, so it keeps me on the right path.

Kim: I think the most important thing is to find the meaning of your work. That’s why I try to stay attuned to what is essential rather than staying on top of trends. I spend a lot of time thinking about what the market truly needs, and how we can develop products of enduring value for consumers. If you cannot quit your job, you’d better find some meaning in it. That’s how I stay convinced and motivated.

Q. What makes you most proud about your work?

Yun: I love every moment working on this team, but I’m all the more reminded of the value of what I do whenever I run into products I helped launch on the market. There’s something mystical about such encounters. I can’t help but feel proud thinking back on the kind and amount of effort I put in to develop each product.

Kim: Since I handle decision-making and tasks mostly on my own, the biggest sense of satisfaction I derive from work is when I get good results by applying innovative ideas. It makes me feel as though I’ve grown as a person.

Q. What are your goals?

Yun: As the DIY market continues to grow, I’d like to lead a project or two on developing products specifically catering to DIY painters. Yes, it will mean more responsibility and work for me, but I’ll have fun working on it. I’ve been working on this team for two years now, so I think it’s time for me to challenge myself to more rigorous tasks now that I’ve familiarized myself with most aspects of this job.

Kang: I want to diversify the portfolio of products for the brand I’m managing. There can be many challenges ahead, but I’m determined to do a good job. I worked in sales for a long time before I made my way to the Market Planning Team last year. The company has given me a great opportunity. I want to pay my tribute to the faith the company has shown in me.

Positive relations and synergy among colleagues

Q. What’s the culture like on your team?

Lee: We all root for one another when we take the helm of whatever project we have set out to lead. As a PM (project manager), anxiety about the possible outcomes of my projects sometimes keeps me awake at night. I can’t lie about that. But I can do my job because I believe in my colleagues, who are genuinely eager to help me.

Yun: We have a free and open working environment where everyone can speak their mind regardless of position or seniority insofar as they have something to contribute to the common goals. This team’s culture allows me to focus on whatever I want to achieve as a PM.

Q. What kind of people is the Market Planning Team looking to attract?

Kang: We’re looking for people who love communicating with a diverse range of people and who like to experiment with new things. Communication with multiple other departments and actors is central to whatever we do, so we’re looking for good communicators.

Lee: We enjoy working with people who are self-driven and can take the initiative to try something new. I’m not saying we’re all inventors bent on creating something that has never existed before. If anything, we believe in the power of small progress. If you’re someone who constantly thinks about how anything can be improved, you’ll fit right in.

Yun: I think the Marketing Planning Team needs people who are talented at reading the current trends on the market and coming up with new ideas. If you have the drive to realize your vision and see a project through, you’ll be a perfect fit! We most definitely welcome opportunities to work with people like that.
