Colors of July: #Yeoreumolivesaek and #Bioneundosisaek

As part of the celebrations for its 75th anniversary, Samhwa Paints has given a native Korean name to each month of the year and also selected the colors representing each month. It is now time for you to discover the name and colors for the month of July.

Samhwa has given the name Gyeonwoojiknyeodal to July as this is when the eponymous characters, Gyeonwoo and Jiknyeo, finally reunite after their year-long separation and longing forced upon them by the ruler of heaven as told in popular Korean folklore.

The two colors Samhwa has chosen for July—which brings boiling heat to Korea and causes a longing for rain showers—are Yeoreumolivesaek (“Summer Olive”), inspired by the deepening of green summer hues, and Bioneundosisaek (“Rainy City”), reminiscent of a rain-soaked concrete jungle.

As temperatures rise further, the green of plants deepens and fruits that have replaced spring blossoms grow larger and riper. Green fruit hanging on trees are refreshing images of summer everywhere. Yeoreumolivesaek reminds us of the fruit of the gods ripening under the scorching summer sun. Compared to the bright, almost neon-like, green of early summer, Yeoreumolivesaek is deeper and more mature.

Greens like Yeoreumolivesaek are part of nature and have a naturally soothing, calming effect. That effect is especially more pronounced in relatively muted greens than in bright greens. Colors like Yeoreumolivesaek should be used sparingly rather than in a way that dominates the room. Match it with other natural colors, such as off-white, for a pleasantly soothing effect. This color is especially recommended for studies and bedrooms as it helps our tired muscles and nerves relax.

The summer monsoon keeps the sky grey in Korea for many days in July. The powerful downpours seem not just to cleanse our city, but also to instantly cool it, however momentarily. Rain-soaked cityscapes in summertime are a natural canvas for urbane jazz, which is captured exactly by Bioneundosisaek. The cool grey is reminiscent of the refreshing breezes we feel as we walk down the streets right after a rain.

Greys like Bioneundosisaek can strike some as too “cool” and sophisticated for their liking. Monochromes like this, however, are subdued enough to complement an infinite range of other colors. That is why greys in all their variations are so loved in modern interior projects all over the world. Naturally, Bioneundosisaek is recommended first and foremost for home office spaces. Mix and match the color with other bright and colorful objects, such as furniture painted in pink, for a stylish effect.

So you’ve discovered Samhwa’s choice of the name and colors for July! Stay tuned next month for more new names and colors in native Korean.
