Colors of May: #Bamsanchaeksaek and #Boratbithyanggisaek
As part of the celebrations for its 75th anniversary, Samhwa Paints has given a native Korean name to each month of the year and also selected the colors representing each month. It’s time to find out what name and colors the company has chosen for the month of May.
Samhwa has given the name Pureundal to May, which is meant as “the month that belongs to all those with pure hearts.” May is when the green of forests and fields deepens and we get to bask in the height of spring. Bamsanchaeksaek (“Night Walk”) and Boratbithyanggisaek (“Purple Scent”) are the two colors Samhwa chose for May, as this is the best month for a refreshing evening walk in the warm breeze that carries the nostalgic scent of lilac blossoms.
Do you notice the change of seasons by the fragrances in the air? Everywhere we go in Korea in May, we smell the sweet scents of late spring blossoms and the energizing smell of green leaves that daily remind us of the end of spring and the beginning of summer just waiting around the corner. City streets are thronged with couples taking leisurely strolls at night at this time of year. Bamsanchaeksaek is meant to capture the pale blue of the midnight sky lit by streetlamps and neon signs that brighten the steps of those in love.
Blues like Bamsanchaeksaek can calm us, enhance our concentration, and make us feel “cooler.” The effects of such a color, however, can vary widely depending on what levels of chromaticity are used. Bamsanchaeksaek is a great addition to monochrome interior design predominantly featuring white or grey. It is certainly the more “classic” choice than reds or yellows as it remains stylish through every season and trend. The color is an especially great choice for the kids’ rooms, a study, and the master bedroom. We recommend it for dining rooms, where it creates an elegant ambience.
If the pale pink of cherry blossoms was the color for April, lilac purple should certainly be the color for May, as the sweet fragrance of lilac blossoms lingers in our hearts and memories. Boratbithyanggi is a color that can be used to give a space an urbane, modern effect or a soft, warming effect. Use it to accent monochrome or neutral interior design for added liveliness. It is also a thought-provoking color that is welcome in any living room or study.
