Colors of October: #Gaeulbampyeonjisaek and #Siwoleuisarangnoraesaek

As part of the celebrations for its 75th anniversary, Samhwa Paints has given a native Korean name to each month of the year and also selected the colors representing each month. Find out what name and colors Samhwa has chosen for October.

Samhwa decided to call October Haneulyeondal, which means “the month when the Morning Country was established upon bakdalmoe (Baekdu Mountain).” October is when the fall sky reaches the peak of its beauty in Korea, with sparse, feather-like clouds stretching across a crystal-clear sky that seems infinitely high and new. With leaves increasingly changing color, Samhwa has chosen Gaeulbampyeonjisaek (“Autumn Night Letter”) to herald the arrival of the warm red that will soon cover the mountains in Korea, and Siwoleuisarangnoraesaek (“October Night Serenade”), inspired by mellow tunes that perfectly suit this increasingly chilly time of the year.

Fall invites us to get out and go somewhere because the temperatures and mood are perfect for traveling. The season is also perfect for reminiscing about those we have loved in the past, and for rediscovering the meaning of love and longing in our lives. As the full moon shines ever so calmly up in the high night sky, we feel the urge to write a letter to those to whom we said goodbye a long time ago. As we continue to write our letter—whether in our imagination or in reality—we notice our hearts, too, are alight with feelings we thought we had long lost, blushing like the leaves on the trees outside. Gaeulbampyeonjisaek is the color of the melancholy unique to autumn nights.

Vintage-looking colors like Gaeulbampyeonjisaek are for anyone who wishes to redo their interior for fall. As temperatures drop and night lengthens at this time of year, we become susceptible to feeling a little down and nostalgic. Warm reddish colors like Gaeulbampyeonjisaek have the power to uplift both mind and spirit. If your mood is vulnerable to the changing seasons, try this color in your home, particularly in your bedroom. More common areas like the living room are also completely suitable. In that case, we suggest that you apply it only sparingly, on a limited surface or a few key items only.

Does your favorite playlist also change with the seasons from one full of dance and pop music to another of mellower tunes? If summer is the season for loud confessions and public displays of young love, fall is the season for intimate whispers between mature lovers. As we hear our favorite sad songs or listen to the voices of our loved ones, our feelings only continue to deepen. Siwoleuisarangnoraesaek captures the mood of a song we wish to play for our most beloved ones this season.

This muted pink is sophisticated and mature, unlike the more “girly” bright pink little girls prefer. Use it in almost any space of your home, whether your bedroom or your living room. Monochromes match this color well, but to different effects. Grey will deepen the soothing elegance of the pink, while white will bring out its warmth and brightness. Use the color with golden objects or fabrics to make your space look even more urbane.
