Using home paints to create lively, vivid pieces of artwork
Samhwa’s collaboration program now appears at the entrance of a home.
Make your wall welcoming
Why not have the first wall your guests see upon entering your house a “welcome wall” that greets them with a pop of colors?
Illustrator Sungmin Jo wanted to create some artwork that would welcome his family and friends as soon as they open his door. He took inspiration from the letter “H,” which begins “Hi” and “Hello,” and painted it in warm, joyful colors.
It makes quite the welcoming home for any guest, wouldn’t you say?
Motifs
The illustrator previously decorated the wall with a picture frame and a skateboard. However, he soon discovered that something flatter was needed for the limited space in the entrance area.
Jo didn’t want familiar lettering painted on. He came up with something truly unique and sketched it onto his wall before beginning to paint, thinking about things that would accentuate the natural flow of his newly created font.
The illustrator says: “I have a habit of writing down themes and inspirations for art in my notebook. As I began getting ready for this project, the word ‘ribbon’ kept coming back over and over. Not the static ribbons that tie up gifts, but the rhythmically moving ribbons that gymnasts use.
“I thought about ribbons that move on their own as I created my first sketch. The result is what you see on this wall.”
Choosing the colors
About his selection of colors, Jo explains: “The natural warm tone of wood is the dominant theme throughout my house, so I wanted colors that match that tone, but remain vivid enough to accentuate the entrance décor. I settled on colors related to orange.
“I added warm gray hues here and there to instill a sense of calm and mildness into what would otherwise have been too bright. I referenced Samhwa’s collection of colors even as I made the draft design.
“The final selection included Peach Sherbet, Rose Blush, Peach Yogurt, Madame Coral, Chiffon White, Storm Gray, Charcoal, and Nimbus Gray.”
Choosing the paints
Jo explains further: “I used Samhwa’s iLux Multi Flat collection of paints as they are eco-friendly and specifically designed for application on interior walls and wallpaper. I like these paints as they provide a matte finish, are odor-free and easily spreadable.
“I strongly recommend iLux Multi Flat for anyone looking for safe and eco-friendly options for interior walls and spaces, as this collection of paints has also been certified hypoallergenic.”
Painting process
Since the wall was already white, the artist applied two coats of every color, making sure that the finished product would look as even as possible. He used artistic paint markers on the edges in the end, taking great care to finish each line in one smooth go.
A special guest joined the process—Edel, the illustrator’s cat! A street rescue, Edel is now a central member of Jo’s family and enjoys watching him at work with intent curiosity.
“I’m happy with the result as it captures what I intended,” Jo says.
The illustrator found the entire process very enjoyable as he was able to apply bright, vivid colors straight onto a white wall. The result indeed matches the rest of his home perfectly, including the red bricks on the exterior wall. Most importantly, his family and frequent guests love it.
