Samhwa introduces FlameCheck, a fireproof epoxy paint
2023/01/06
Samhwa Paints, a leader in paints for architecture in Korea, announced on January 4, 2023, that it has successfully developed FlameCheck EXP-120 (for Pillars and Beams), which can protect non-solvent epoxy surfaces against fire for an hour, and that the product has obtained the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT)’s Building Material Quality Certificate.
The low-carbon steel that is mostly used in building steel-frame structures begins to collapse in large fires that are capable of reducing the durability of the steel frame by more than 60 percent. Korean law on construction therefore requires that steel-frame buildings be given fireproof treatment sufficient for one to three hours of protection, depending on height.
FlameCheck EXP-120 is a highly functional epoxy fireproof paint that can prevent or delay fire-induced structural distortion or collapse. Painted to a thickness of just 2.45 millimeters, the product can provide the necessary fireproof protection.
FlameCheck is one of the many products that attest to Samhwa’s advanced technological capabilities. It takes sophisticated technologies to develop a paint that can provide such effective fire protection at so thin a layer. Being able to use the paint in thin layers means that builders and developers can minimize the cost by reducing the amount of time and paint it takes to complete the required task.
Thanks to introduction of EXP-120, Samhwa can now offer a complete range of non-solvent epoxy fireproof paints providing one-, two-, and three-hour fireproof protection.
FlameCheck generates nearly no dust during application, and is adhesive enough to be painted directly over steel frames. The paint remains crack- and peel-free even after long exposure to the elements, thereby providing long-lasting fireproof protection. The paint is also an eco-friendly alternative to oil-based acryl fireproof paints as it produces less volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
A Samhwa spokesperson explained: “The latest addition to the FlameCheck series provides effective fire protection for at least one hour as required by construction law, and is devoid of application-related issues. We anticipate that it will receive an enthusiastic welcome from builders of steel frames.”
