Samhwa Paints has become the first Korean company to win a UL1709 certificate with its fireproof paint, CHARREX PFP-1000, specifically designed for petrochemical plants.
UL (Underwriters Laboratories Inc.) issues UL certificates that serve as the official standards of safety for products and industries in the United States and that are highly regarded worldwide as well.
The UL1709 certificate, pertaining to the safety of fireproof structures, has been issued for the products of only a handful of companies so far, such as PPG (USA), AkzoNobel (Netherlands), and Jotun (Norway).
The UL1709-certified CHARREX has been designed to withstand hydrocarbon fires*, which are more intense and dangerous than the cellulosic fires** that affect regular buildings. CHARREX is therefore capable of protecting hard materials making up structures of great significance, such as on-land petrochemical plants.
*Hydrocarbon fires: Fires that start in oil or gas and that reach 1,100°C in the first five minutes or so.
**Cellulosic fires: Fires that start in wood or pulp used in regular buildings and that reach 500°C in five minutes or starting.
CHARREX can also significantly reduce the period of time (and therefore the cost) it takes to build a petrochemical plant as it can withstand fires for up to four years without the meshes needed for passive fire protection.
Heo Gwi-haeng, Director of the Central Research Lab at Samhwa, explained: “It is very important to note that Samhwa is the only company to win the UL1709 certificate with a Korean technology. We will use this occasion to accelerate our efforts to reseach and develop new original technologies for global growth.”
The global market for fireproof paints for petrochemical plants is currently estimated to be worth KRW 300 billion. Samhwa intends to maintain its focus on sales and technology to increase its presence in that market.
