Paint Terminology (24)
도료 용어 테이블
Name Image Description
Silking
Silking refers to thread-like streaks that occur in painted layers as the paint (whether applied with paint roller or spray gun) dries too quickly. (Silking can be reduced by further diluting the paint or by using a delayed-dry thinner.)
Bleeding
This is when two or more coats of different colors have been applied and the coat underneath seeps through the top coat to cause the latter’s color to turn and change.
Hardness
Refers to how hard the painted layer is.
Pot life/pot stability
This is the period of time for which a paint mixing two or more components remains in a usable state without gelating or hardening.
Bubbling
This occurs when a bubble created at the time the paint was applied remains in the finished painted layer. Such bubbles can occur if the paint is stirred too quickly or too strongly, if the solvent used dries up too quickly, if the surface is too high in temperature, or if the paint used is too thick (viscous).
Impact test
An impact test assesses how well a painted object withstands a shock/crash exerted to it. SH-S4-0202_G054 An impact tester in use.
Dipping/dip coating
This is a way of painting an object by submerging it inside a paint (letting the excess paint drip off after the object is pulled out of the paint).
Accelerated weathering test
Paint on exterior surfaces is weathered over time due to the natural elements of sunlight, wind, and precipitation. Artificial tests can be performed in labs to test the weathering tendency of paint in short periods of time, by projecting sunlight-like light or UV rays or spraying water onto painted samples.
Removers
Removers are paints used to peel and remove existing paint.
Yellowing
White or near-white painted surfaces may turn creamy or yellower in color due to reaction with heat, light, chemicals or oxygen in the air. Yellowing is a result of the ultraviolet rays of sunlight (or of light from fluorescent bulbs) or of reaction with nitrogen oxides in the air in most cases. Yellowing is also a characteristic of epoxy resins that can manifest when the resins are painted on at a temperature higher than the appropriate range.
